  • As in our previous events we don´t want just to talk about how helpful the Circular Economy would be, but really try it out thinking on how to put in place for some real products and businesses. In this workshop we will apply the Circular Economy Toolkit which is also available online on http://www.circulareconomytoolkit.org/about.html. We are cooperating with designaustria, the knowledge center for design in Austria – so we should be getting a lot of inputs for Circular Designs.

The Circular Economy Toolkit has been developed by the University of Cambridge to bridge the gap from theory of Circular Economy to the practical application in companies.

The groups enjoyed the ride finding real circular solutions for chairs, fridges, pills and diapers by focusing on the needs of the users rather than just taking the current product and finding a way to improve the status quo. It was quite impressive what a group of mixed professionals can come up with in a short time. At the beginning there were still a lot of invisible barriers to the thoughts, quite typical for the way we think about new busines models, like “I never thought about that”, “we never asked this question” or “I assume it´s built like this for a good reason”, up to “that is legally not possible”. The further we went from the more common way of looking into improvements to the way products are created, used or maintained to thinking about how to enable reusing and reselling or remanufacturing, the further the opportunities of Circular Economy became visible. When the teams started to embrace the “product as a service” option, they really developed eco-systems for the user groups, which would surely be a benefit for a different way of doing business.
