Join the CEC #CircularCities movement

and team with your city to launch a circular economy strategy.

In the fall of 2019, the Circular Economy Club (CEC) celebrated its inaugural “Circular Cities Week” global event (Oct. 28-Nov. 3, 2019). The goal: to push, with a united voice, for the design and implementation of circular economy strategies in cities worldwide. In 2020, more than ever, we need to work towards building resilient cities that recover from environmental, social and health crisis. We believe in the circular economy as a model that will help cities to become more resilient. The Circular Cities Week took place on Oct. 26-Nov. 1, 2020), again alongside the UN World Cities Day.

What is the #CircularCities Week

“Circular Cities Week” is an annual, decentralized global event. In 2019, over 80 CEC Chapters signed up to organize workshops to identify opportunities and next steps to encourage implementation of the circular economy in their cities. CEC Chapters organized the workshop and the findings can be found in this the Circular Cities Week REPORT. This process included bringing in stakeholders from city governments, private and nonprofit sectors, and academia—and providing a multi-stakeholder call to action. In 2020, we moved to an online format and the outcomes can be found in the report below.

Why the #CircularCities Week

The CEC envisions a world in which every city in every country functions and prospers through circularity, ending the age of waste. An ambitious goal such as this requires clarity and clearly defined deadlines. “Circular Cities Week” provides this critical framework.
The condensed timeframe of “Circular Cities Week” encourages a sense of urgency and purpose designed to help stakeholders identify opportunities, challenges and next steps for supporting the development of circularity at the city government level. The objectives of the week are two-fold;
  • Raise awareness about the potential for the circular economy framework to build more resilient cities, considering the current COVID-19 pandemic; and
  • Engage citizens to design and implement a circular city and gather suggestions to create a global report gathering the top suggestions.

The list below includes CEC city chapters that are hosting events for “Circular Cities Week.” If your city is not yet on the list and you cannot find a CEC Organizer in your city, consider applying to Open a CEC Chapter. As a CEC City Organizer, you will be able to create the event in your city and will be asked to follow the CEC Toolkit with the step-by-step on how to organize the session.

As the CEC Organizer for Kuala Lumpur & Petaling Jaya, Circular Cities Week 2019 had participation from government & agencies, private sector, not for profits, members of academia and the civil society acting on the urgency to strengthen multi-stakeholders call in designing the Circular City Canvas. We are now looking forward to Malaysia’s Circular Roadmap which will be launched by the Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment & Climate Change at the end of this year.

The 1st Circular Cities Week brought engagement opportunities among government, local authorities, private sector, NGOs, academia, experts and the civil society. This multi sector approach provided an opportunity for identifying, analyzing, prioritizing and agreeing on major challenges and opportunities for our city to become circular.
