Reblend turns old textiles into new yarn to create a fashion collection with positive impact.
The Reblend team loves fashion & textiles. They say fashion “gives a a reflection of ourselves. We can use it to express what we like, who we are and what is important to us.”
But it also gives very mixed feelings. The fashion and textiles business is one of the most environmental unfriendly industries in the world.
In Europe and Northern America there is 15 million tonnes of textile waste, basically the weight of 4 million elephants.
And it is a real waste in the sense that 95% has the potential to be recycled. We think it is time to address the elephant in the room. Or to be more precise 4 million elephants.
Their debut collection is made in co-creation with Amsterdam fashion label BYBROWN. The 7 piece collection includes a woven pair of trousers and a dress as well as a couple of knits.

Composition of the yarn; 70% from recycled garments (85% cotton, 12% polyester and 3% various) and 30% from recycled polyester from PET bottles.
Post consumer textile waste sorted by hand according to colour and composition, is the main source of the textiles. The yarn is made by the Spanish company Recover and certified by Global Recycling Standard, Oeko-tex Standard 100 and Global Compact.
Process
We became intrigued by the fact that recycling is focused on pure materials (100% cotton, wool or polyester). What we wear is mostly a combination of materials. It is easy to see that this creates a huge gap between theory and reality!
So we use an actionable and pragmatic approach. What can be done in a positive responsible way? – instead of disregarding a huge part of the current, mostly blended, textile waste. The textiles are sorted by hand providing employability to people with poor job prospects. The next steps are industrial; shredding, adding a supplement of recycled polyester from PET bottles for extra strength and subsequently spinning new yarn. Using post-consumer textile waste in an ecological friendly process gives yarn with a positive ecological impact!
