  • Circular economy is a fast growing trend in municipalities around the world – but what are municipalities really doing to integrate the concept into their operations?

Based on a five month intensive research project, the report “Circular Economy in Cities around the World” has been released. It outlines inspiring circular economy projects around the world and providing recommendations for municipalities to bring circular economy into their cities.

The research was conducted by Patrick LindnerCynthia Mooij, and Heather Rogers as a follow up to their final Master thesis for the MSc. Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability program at the Blekinge Institute of Technology in Karlskrona, Sweden.

The report provides a synthesized definition of CE from various cities and other organisations in the field, showing the broad and evolving nature of the concept. 16 case studies are then presented, highlighting varying circular economy projects that municipalities have either initiated or been a major supporter of.

These projects range from municipality-initiated businesses, like Camp Small in Baltimore City, USA, to resource platforms that are stimulating circular economy through sharing, like Share Peterborough in Peterborough, UK. Each case study outlines the departments involved as well as the specific benefits the project brings to the city, providing resources to municipalities who are interested in taking similar steps. The report is intended for municipal departments who wish to move toward a circular economy, or those simply interested in an overview of the concepts’ current trends in the urban context.

Circular economy, and the ways it can be implemented in cities is in a period of significant evolution.

Research has shown that currently, circular economy in cities is positively contributing to a sustainable society. There are also many passionate practitioners who are devoting themselves to its advancement. Recommendations that are provided to municipalities when integrating circular economy in their city, are summarized into four key areas:

    • Recognizing and Leveraging Influence
    • Adapting to Culture
    • Integrating System-Level Solutions
    • Providing Internal Education

These four areas help to clarify the municipality’s role in the process of circular economy integration and support the formation of city-specific solutions. Additionally, developing a clear and shared understanding of circular economy within the municipality is recommended. A synthesized understanding of circular economy from various cities and other organisations in the field is part of the report.
