  • Food in the circular economy

Over the last 100 years, the agricultural system has been disrupted by several technologies that have transformed food supply completely. Whereas food supply used to be from local farms serving local markets, it has become a vast global network of farmers, agribusiness and stakeholders. The drive for efficiency, higher yields and lower costs has led to unforeseen issues.

Agriculture has a great impact on our planet: it takes up half the Earth’s land surface and causes 35% of all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; 70% of freshwater withdrawals is used for it; and it is the most significant source of loss of biodiversity and deforestation.

Climate change is already calculated to have a negative impact on food production and food security in some areas of the world, while there are expectations for the sector to meet a rise in demand by 70% to 100% within the next 40 years.

In this e-book, the failings of the industrial food system and the opportunities of a circular food system are presented with several case studies. Click on the link below to open the ebook.

Thank you Esra for sharing this paper; very helpful contribution to the discourse on how the circular economy can mitigate the adverse impacts of the climate and ecological crisis. It will also help me with my University of Amsterdam / Metabolic Summer School assignment on Food Production and Food Waste in the Greater Brighton Region (where I live). The Netherlands has a lot to teach the world about the practical application of circular principles particularly in cities. All the best. Peter
