  • I believe Mallorca, with its capital city of Palma,  offers a great opportunity for circularity. Being an island confers it very distinctive characteristics regarding resource use, import and export of goods and also local production. Furthermore, tourism shapes the economy. Millions of people from all over the world visit the island every year to enjoy its beauty and this gives many opportunities for businesses to thrive. However, since this tourism industry follows mostly a linear model it also generates a lot of pressure on resources and creates conflicts with local residents as services get collapsed during peak months and priority is sometimes given to accommodate the needs of visitors rather than that of citizens. On the other hand, Mallorcans have a strong sense of identity and like to support local produce and businesses and keep their culture alive.

I think this mix of factors confer to the island of Mallorca a good base for circular initiatives, with the city of Palma being the center hub.

As for my personal motivation towards setting up this club, I consider myself a circular economy advocate. I started hearing about the Circular Economy concept almost five years ago when I was working on fighting plastic pollution. Since then I have come across it in different settings and have become increasingly interested and excited about the systemic change that can come from this shift in the current economic model. To the point in which I have steered my career and decided to focus on advocating for a Circular Economy as a path that will lead to a sustainable society. I am currently studying a masters’ degree on Circular Economy and have been selected to be part of the 2021 “From Linear to Circular Programme” from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. As I am deepening my knowledge on the topic I am also reflecting about ways to apply my skills in to actively promoting circular practices locally. I believe the Circular Economy Club is the perfect network for this by providing support, experience and connection to other clubs.
