Cockhaise Farm in Haywards Heath is an organic dairy farm run by Jeremy and Dan Burdett. Jeremy has been on the farm since 1986 and his son Dan joined him in 2008. They have 4 full-time staff who look after 300 cows plus 100 young stock which are non-milking breeds. Cockhaise covers 700 acres and their method of farming aims to build soil fertility and create a vibrant ecosystem.
For many years they have grown a large area of arable crops such as wheat, oats and beans, but now the farm is mainly growing grass. They are starting to bring greater diversity into the fields to build up organic matter in the soil through 20 varieties of grass, herbs and deep rooting plants.
This event will give participants an insight into the challenges of bringing sustainability and circular thinking into organic dairy farming. Here is a link to Dan’s blog which will gives some background information and their plans for the future.
Transport by car from Haywards Heath railway station will be arranged depending on how many people require it. Please email info@circularbrightonandhove.uk if you would like to take advantage of this.
