  • Registration is open for the Spring School on Circular Economy from 8-11 April in Leiden. Apply by 28 March 2019 for your free place!

    Course description

The School focuses on circular economy and is organised in collaboration with the EIT RawMaterials funded Raw Materials Scenario (RaMaScene) project. The lead organiser is Leiden University’s Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML), and the school is supported by KU Leuven and the University of Bordeaux. The program in short consists of:

A total program of 4 days, plus one day of arrival and welcome reception.

    • Two days of introduction to tools like Life cycle assessment, Material flow analysis, and Input-Output analysis, and exercises with the RaMaScene tool, that helps students to build circularity scenarios and make rough calculations on economic and environmental benefits. This part is given not only to the cohort of 15 PhD students, but also to about 10 professionals that join this part of the course
    • One day of classes into circular economy policy making
    • One day that combines career counselling, a review of grant options for young researchers, exchanges on their own PhD, and support in writing an outline postdoc proposal.

    Course content

After taking part in this course, trainees will

    • have a basic understanding of the value chain of raw materials including exploration, mining, processing, materials selection & development, manufacturing, use and end of life options (including recycling).
    • understand different environmental systems analyses including LCA, MFA and IOA, that enable assessment of the impacts of materials use and circular economy improvements.
    • understand how such impacts of circularity options benefit society in economic and environmental terms using the RaMaScene screening tool.
    • understand the societal relevance of moving to a circular economy, the transition challenges such changes pose, and which policy approaches are useful.
    • understand the pro’s and con’s and challenges and opportunities to pursue a career in science at universities, realising tenure via a series of post-doc positions; supporting students to make a well-founded choice of which type of career to pursue
    • understand which grant systems typically are available to support early stage career researchers after their PhD, and what it takes to write a successful proposal for this.

    The course will cover:

    • Circularity assessment and modelling with RaMaScene (CML)
    • Circular economy policies (KU Leuven)
    • PhD exchange, career counselling and grant writing (CML and University of Bordeaux)

    Format

The course combines classroom lectures and blended learning (www.ramascene.eu).
