  • Youth for Environmental Development(YED) is a Community-Based Organization that started operating in one of outskirt communities of Lilongwe, Malawi’s capital,  back in 2017 on environmental management and dominantly, waste management. It has since provided opportunities to young people to develop their leadership potential through voluntary work in environmental education, citizen science and community journalism. It has so far engaged with over 310 community households and one secondary school on waste management programs. Amid its journey, it has received a small grant from Common Wealth Foreign Office to inspire university students at one of public universities in Malawi, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) on Citizen Science, Community Service and local development. YED has and continues to inspire communities with waste-value recovery model projects at community level. On the same line, it is upscaling its waste-recovery programs to unravel full potential value waste have and, this program is going to transform the organization into a Social Enterprise that apart from providing sustainable waste management means but also hopes to create employment opportunities primarily for marginalized groups in the community including youths and women.
